What is a MIFI Device?
MIFI (Mobile Wi-Fi) is a small device that functions to create a WiFi hotspot from a cellular network signal (3G, 4G, 5G) that is fed through a SIM card. This device allows multiple devices such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets to connect to the internet simultaneously. MiFi is ideal for users who travel frequently or work in places without fixed WiFi access, as it provides connectivity anywhere there is a cellular signal.
MIFI Device Regulations in Indonesia
In Indonesia, telecommunication devices, including MIFI, must comply with the regulations set by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo). These regulations aim to:
- Ensure user safety and security.
- Prevent interference with other networks.
- Align with international wireless device standards.
In accordance with regulations established by the government, devices that use radio frequencies must be certified. As with MIFI, these devices typically use WLAN frequencies, commonly known as WIFI. MIFI devices comply with regulations established by the government, namely KEPMEN KOMDIGI No. 12 of 2025 concerning WLAN frequencies. The following are the WLAN regulations permitted in Indonesia.
No | Radio Frequency | RLAN 2,4 GHz/5 GHz for access type 1 | RLAN 2,4 GHz/5 GHz for access type 2 or Backhaul |
1 | 2400-2483,5 MHz | ≤ 27 dBm EIRP (500 mW) | ≤ 36 dBm EIRP (4 Watt) |
2 | 5150-5250 MHz | ≤ 23 dBm EIRP (200 mW) | – |
3 | 5250-5350 MHz | ≤ 23 dBm EIRP (200 mW) | – |
4 | 5725-5825 MHz | ≤ 23 dBm EIRP (200 mW) | ≤ 36 dBm EIRP (4 Watt) |
In addition to WLAN regulations, MIFI devices also use LTE regulations, commonly known as 4G. In accordance with the regulations established by the government in Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Decree No. 352 of 2024, which regulates the technical standards for communication devices and/or mobile telecommunication devices, particularly those related to the use of 4G technology. LTE in Indonesia only allows for use on several main bands, including:
4G LTE KOMDIGI DEGREE NO. 352 OF 2024 |
BAND | UP LINK | DOWN LINK |
(1) 2100 MHz | 1920-1980 MHz | 2110-2170 MHz
(3) 1800 MHz | 1710-1785 MHz | 1805-1880 MHz
(5) 800 MHz | 824-849 MHz | 869-894 MHz
(8) 900 MHz | 880-915 MHz | 925-960 MHz
(28) 700 MHz | 703-748 MHz | 758-803 MHz
(31) 450 MHz | 452,5-457,5 MHz | 462,5-467,5 MHz
(40) | 2300-2400 MHz | 2300-2400 MHz |
To be legally distributed in Indonesia, MIFI devices must undergo a telecommunication device certification process conducted by the Directorate General of Digital Infrastructure (DJID).
Key aspects of MIFI certification include:
- Technical frequency and emission testing to ensure compliance.
- Official SDPPI certification label attached to approved devices.
- Authorized imports allowed only through approved companies or distributors.
Cerapproval, as a certification agency, assists companies in obtaining the required certification so that MIFI devices can enter the Indonesian market legally.
How to Use a MIFI Device
Beyond certification, proper usage is essential for optimal performance:
- Insert a SIM card from your chosen mobile operator.
- Turn on the MIFI device using the power button.
- Connect other devices (laptop, smartphone, tablet) to the Wi-Fi network.
- Set up a username and password via the device dashboard or mobile app.
- Charge the battery fully for reliable outdoor use.
With proper usage, MIFI devices provide a convenient portable internet solution, especially for travelers, field workers, and business operations.
